The Ozarks Bonsai Guild

Why use the term "Guild"?

The word guild, reflects so many aspects of the world of Bonsai.

A "Guild" is a society of people.
A "Guild" brings to mind the historical industrial / apprenticeship structure from medieval times, evoking the long history of the Bonsai, as well as the educational purpose of this group.
A "Guild" is also used to refer to a group of plants living together.

No other word, like society, or association brought to life all of these aspects, thus:
The Ozarks Bonsai Guild

3. Botany. a group of plants, as parasites, having a similar habit of growth and nutrition.

Welcome to the Ozarks Bonsai Guild

I am very pleased to see so many members in such a short time. Welcome Everyone! Please let all your friends know about this site as well.

I am Jeff Germann. I have been interested in Bonsai for years. I have purchased and killed many, many "mallsai". You know what mallsai are, those are those little juniper trees you purchased at the mall, or along side the road that sold for about $45.00 and you were so excited, because now you have a beautiful little piece of living artwork that you can display at home. A few weeks later you discovered the thing was either dead or dying. Many people give up on bonsai after that. I have, several times. However, I never really wanted to walk away from that beautiful little tree. I wanted to have some bonsai of my own. So I kept trying. I am still new to this, I still haven't had a bonsai survive past one year... but I am going to keep trying.

I want to learn as much as I can, and I am sure there are others out there in the Ozarks as well, that love these little trees. So I have started this club.

I hope you will join me. All enthusiasts of Bonsai are welcome here. From the novice, like me. to the experts. Especially the experts, please join us, share your knowledge. I will share my zeal.

Hello, all, Sow bugs can be controlled by diatom eath, at some garden centers, totally safe, even for earthworms. only works on hard bodied insects by getting in the soft movible parts and cuts them up. Too all, sunday the 19th bonsai club meeting.

Hello, welcome to the Guild. Fair warning, this site was supposed to have been taken off-line already. It almost looks like it's not going to happen but if you find this group won't come up one day..... Otherwise there is a link on here to…

Good info. I had intended to look into these critters myself. I had noticed I would find a concentration of them in pots of ailing trees. I figure they were attracted to rotting roots of declining trees or something. But they actually eat a…

They are related to crawdads and eat the humus in the soil. If they eat too much you can have large air pockets in your soil which isn't good. You might add sand around the top of the pot and when you water it will settle down the sides between…

Roly Polies (Wooldlice)

I just purchased a Crimson Queen japanese red maple last night that I plan to do bonsai with. I am currlently leaving it in its original pot for a short time to allow the roots more time to develop before I move it to a Bonsai pot. I noticed today that there are alot of roly polies in the pot with the tree. It is still young and I don't want to have problems from them later will they hurt the tree? Do I need to do something to get rid of them before I transplant the tree?See More

If there is enough interest in a workshop I will shoot for October 17th or Nov 21. I'm thinking of a trunk carving workshop. We could do the basics on the tree and more with bleaching,... in Dec. or Jan. gathering. Included would be tree, use…

Club news, etc..................

News: There's a Japanese Festival this weekend, there are some bonsai there some years. The clubs not going to be able to be there because the Parks Department will only let you setup on the Thursday before, and I could only exbihit on sunday, I guess they think a bonsai club exhibit is too disruptive to a Japanese Festival?!   See More

Looking for Bonsai

My wife and I are visiting the area from MA and staying in Branson for the week. We've been interested in and taking classes in Bonsai for over 5 years now. We're interested in locating local bonsai nurseries where we can view native trees. Any suggestions?

Photographing your Bonsai (Copied from a well respected British site) author: Jerry Norbury

I once wrote a nice big post on the subject on bonsaihelp – all gone. So here it is again…

- Use a matt white or light coloured back drop - some use black but it really depends on the

tree colour if that works well. Outdoors I use either black or off-white

pieces (1M sq) of cardboard which I bought at an art-supply shop.

Indoors I use stainless steel.

Choosing a Soil Type

This is a vast subject and one of the most controversial within the bonsai growing community. I once published an article for a newsletter on this subject that ran to nearly 200,000 words! There are no absolutes here but if you understand a little of the science you will be well equipped to chose soil mixes for your bonsai. A lot of what has been published on this subject is based on some very spurious wisdom.

As we have already discovered in this article every bonsai tree is different, in… Continue
